How an invention is traced to a country

In order: the country of its applicants; failing that, of its inventors; failing that, the office where it was first filed. Of international families, 99% rest on the applicant. Of all families, home-only filings included, 38% rest on the applicant and 61% on the first office.

Where the first office stands in
Some offices publish no country for their applicants, China and Japan above all, so an invention filed only at home there is given to the country of its first office. Where both are known, the two agree for 90% of families: well for the United States, China, Japan and South Korea, poorly for countries whose firms file first in the United States or at the European Patent Office.
